Scary Stuff!
We have to always be on guard in our society for any suggestion that entire groups of Americans should be singled out for the actions of a small few who happen to be of the same race, ethnicity or religion. In history, when this has happened it has only led to absolute horrors. One example is the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans during World War II.
This particular individual has rubbed me the wrong way for years. His suggestions are dangerous and we should all take care to watch what he does very, very carefully: Examining Peter King's Calls for Muslim Surveillance
Let's try to do our best to make sure history doesn't repeat itself and we don't go casting blame for the Boston bombing on thousands of our fellow Americans who deeply love our country.

Sunday in The Hills With Waffles
All my commenting on the other thread about how badly Forest Hills could use a decent place to have a good breakfast got me to remembering that this past Sunday I finally tried that Waffle truck parked on 71st Continental. I know, I know—some readers and waffleites—will be appalled that I had never tried it before. But the fact is I have been really trying to watch my calories, especially now with my, ahem, next birthday coming up which makes me feel way too old. Anyway, I am now a true believer in the Lord in heaven and all that is holy. It was truly delicious! And most surprisingly, so freakin' light. I was expecting to feel so stuffed and it just wasn't that way at all.
It all left me thinking that, heck, if we don't have any other place right now nearby to get an awesome breakfast, at least we have Waffles!

Station House Opens
Station House on 71st Continental recently opened. Here's a look inside, and also a quick snap I took of their menu. The place specializes in whiskey and craft beer and offers an interesting food menu as well. Remember when this space used to be that Mexican place selling crusted over guacamole and sad, brown lettuce? Oh, and humus for some reason? Quite a change.

Gourmet Sandwiches Come to Forest Hills
Finally, there's a place to stop in and quickly get some higher quality sandwiches here in Forest Hills. The recently opened Mr. Vino's Cucina now offers a variety of artisanal sandwiches with gourmet ingredients.
As long-time followers of this blog know, I've been saying for years that one of the untapped needs of residents of Forest Hills is a conveniently-located place to pick up a wholesome, quality sandwich. We now have just such a place smack dab in the center of the neighborhood. They offer several Daily Specials, or you can have them make for you whatever your heart—I mean stomach—desires.
The closest thing we've had so far is La Boulangerie, which offers several excellent sandwiches, including their take on a pastrami sandwich (excellent, highly recommend you try it if you haven't), a tuna sandwich, and others. La Boulangerie does not make sandwiches to order, however.

Sun Cycle's New Location
I love what Sun Cycle Studios did with their new location in the 71st Continental "Mini Mall." Talk about breathing some new life into a space that really needed it! The other businesses in there, like The Lite Choice, are probably happy to see this new neighbor. The space had been quiet for so long. And you couldn't have planned two neighbors with better synergy. Go for a cycle spin and then have a refreshing low-fat dessert.

Boy, wouldn't it be beautiful to have public use of the Tea Garden again? It just sits there dilapidated. What a waste.

Five Things Mets Fans Can Actually Enjoy
As the baseball season gets underway, I thought it'd be fun to hear from my fellow blogger and radio personality Jackie Micucci, who regularly writes about her beloved Yankees and baseball overall. Jackie agreed to offer a little guest commentary for Edge of the City on what New York fans can expect this season.
Five Things Mets Fans Can Actually Enjoy
Five Things Mets Fans Can Actually Enjoy
It may be a long season for New York Mets fans. Their Cy
Young Award winning pitcher R.A. Dickey was traded to the Blue Jays during the
offseason. Ace pitcher Johan Santana is already out for the year, undergoing
his second shoulder surgery in 31 months. And the Mets are locked solidly in
rebuilding mode while sharing the NL East with the Washington Nationals… a team
chock full of talent and predicted by many pundits (myself included) to capture
this year’s World Series crown.
So why bother to care at all about the Amazins? Beyond the
obvious—that the summer is not complete until you’re sitting in the stands at
Citi Field enjoying a Nathan’s hot dog and a Brooklyn Lager—here are five
things that Mets fans can actually enjoy this baseball season.
David
Wright The Mets locked up their All-Star third baseman this past
winter, giving him an eight-year, $138 million contract. Then he joined the
ranks of past Mets greats Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and John Franco by being
named team captain. Wright, who was one of the few bright spots on Team USA
during the World Baseball Classic, had a great 2012 season and will continue to
be a potent threat in the Mets’ offense.
Matt
Harvey and Zack Wheeler These young arms could develop into a nice
one-two punch for the Mets. Harvey, who debuted late last summer, will have his
first full season in the major leagues and looked dominating in his first start
against the Padres, going seven innings and striking out 10. Wheeler is getting
a little more seasoning in the minors, where he’s working out some control
issues. However, given the injuries to the starting rotation, fans will likely see
the phenom take the mound at Citi Field sooner rather than later.
The
All-Star Game Citi Field is the site of this year’s Midsummer Classic and
all the hoopla surrounding it. Yeah, I know, even though it counts no one
really cares about the game, but it’s still fun to have all that star power in
your home ballpark. Plus, the Home Run Derby at Citi Field will really separate
the mere mortals from the fearsome sluggers. My advice: If you really want a
treat, check out the Futures Game to see some of the most talented prospects in
baseball.
The Food
at Citi Field The food offerings at Citi Field are probably second only to
Seattle’s Safeco in my book. Not only do you have Shake Shack burgers, but
there’s also BBQ from Blue Smoke, Italian hero sandwiches and cannolis from
Mama’s of Corona and pizza from one of my favorites, Two Boots. Oh, and don’t
forget Box Frites; their fries make San Francisco’s garlic fries seem downright
pedestrian.
The
Yankees will also be Playing Golf in October In the interest of full disclosure, I’m a
Yankees fan, but I’m also realistic. This is going to be a painful season in
The Bronx. The Yankees are old and beaten up, and ownership is playing it
“cheap” for the next couple of years. So here it is, Mets fans: Your moment of schadenfreude.
Enjoy watching your prospects develop while your cross-town rivals parade
around a lineup of aging stars and rent-a-wrecks.

Car Break-Ins in Forest Hills
A reader contacted me today about what she says is a string of car break-ins in the Forest Hills area. Yesterday she found her car parked on Kew Forest Lane with the passenger window broken. She says only the ash tray was taken and and that they went through the glove compartment and left everything on the seat. And then last night she saw another car parked around the block (on 77 Ave.) with the driver's window broken. And then this morning a neighbor told her that one day last week the car parked in front of her's on Queens Blvd. also had the passenger window broken into overnight. She wanted to publicize this string of car break-ins in the hopes that her neighbors don't leave any valuables in their cars.
I'm sure many of you have noticed the Police Command Center parked on 71st/Continental (pictured). Not sure if it is because of these break-ins. But I've seen some reports of burglaries down near Metropolitan Ave. and then there of course was the attempted rape in Forest Park (they have not yet caught the perpetrator in that case.)

Inside Mr. Vino's Cucina
I paid a quick visit this afternoon to Mr. Vino's Cucina, the new gourmet food shop on Austin St. The place is stocked with everything from smoked salmon to olives, cheeses and meats. And a lot of beer. Here's a few photos... Also check out their new Facebook page, and don't forget to like them!

Early Spring in Central Park
No one serves up spring quite like Central Park. A couple of scenes from this past weekend--you know, before winter returned. Talk about a guest that doesn't get the hint that it's time to leave! Jeez! Fingers crossed that we've seen the last of the really cold weather and can now look forward to some normal spring weather.

The Flying Pig Update
The Flying Pig, the gastropub taking over the former Johnny Rockets space on Austin St., has unveiled a new facade, and also a new website which promises "there will be something for everyone." Take a look at their website for a sketch of what the site will eventually look like. Very nice!
